Rugby World Cup Night Out

Well Sunday night has rolled around and it is time for the final of the Rugby World Cup.  New Zealand is in the final with their nemesis the French.

We have guests staying with us at the b&b tonight from France and also a young couple from the UK.  We’ve invited them all to watch the game with us down at the Dunnolie Tavern on the big screen.  The Dunnolie serve food too, so we all head down for dinner pre game.

Dominique and Vivienne are from Bordeaux in France and Jonny and Katie are from London.  They have all been having a wonderful holiday so far in New Zealand and today travelled from Franz Josef glaciers to be with us.

We arrive at the Dunnolie Tavern and there are quite a few locals there, ready for the big game.  The Rugby World cup comes around every 4 years and the last time NZ won was in 1987 – at Eden Park, against the French.  All of NZ (presumably anyway!) is hoping for a repeat result – a win to the All Blacks and the All Blacks becoming the new World Champions.

We all order drinks and some dinner.  Fairly basic food but very cheap and very tasty!   At last the pre-game build up is over and the game finally begins.  The All Blacks sore a try early on from then on it is an arm wrestle and the kiwis in the bar wait with bated breath.  It is a very tense atmosphere – both the kiwis and the French!  The young English couple are vying for the All Blacks – our French guests are on their own.

Full time rolls around and rather than jubilation there is more a sense of relief.  The All Blacks are finally the World Champions.

We had a lovely evening with our guests and I think they enjoyed the real Kiwi experience – country pub filled with locals watching rugby.  Can’t get too much more Kiwi than that!
