Gorgeous morning on the West Coast this morning so after breakfasts and the cleaning is finished we load up the dogs and the bikes and head into Greymouth for a quick blast up the Bundy mountain biking.
There has been some rain overnight the last couple of nights and rain on and off yesterday so the single track section of the Bundy is a bit muddy and slippery. Not too many water holes along the way though. The vegetation is getting quite overgrown but makes it more fun as the trail has now turned into true single track. Near the end of the single track a couple of trees have come down over the track so you have to crouch down nice and low to get under them without catching your hydropak.
Next section is 4WD forestry roads and we’ve decided to do the forestry section in reverse to our normal route as Ziggy has a bit of a lame leg so we think going down the middle road will be less rough than hooting down Gordies like normal – hopefully making it a bit easier on Ziggy. Stephen heads off ahead so that I can go slow with Nico and Ziggy. Ziggy is happy to just trot along, swapping sides of the road for the softer grass verge whichever side is better. It is a deceptively long downhill and I’m pleased we are going down for a change rather than climbing back out of it.
We then meander along down the flats amongst the pine trees before starting the climb up out of Gordies. This is really steep – steeper than the middle road but probably not as long. Thankfully the steep part is at the beginning and it gradually tapers off closer to the top. Gets the heart rate going though and the leg muscles working. Stephen stops at the start for a quick bike adjustment so I take the lead. Just when I’m thinking I might make it to the top first for a change, Stephen rides past me like I’m not even moving…… rather deflating to say the least! All good though, I plod on and eventually we are rewarded with a small downhill to meet back up with the main forestry road back towards the single track.
All in all it is a pretty slow ride today – nice to be out on the bike in the sunshine but we want to take it easy and not let Ziggy run too hard. It is pretty hot so neither of the boys seem to mind too much and seem quite happy just to trot along rather than race us.
Back at the car, all loaded up and heading for home in time for guest checkins.
Stephen and Jan run Breakers Boutique Accommodation on the Punakaiki coastline just north of Greymouth. They are avid mountain bikers and are happy to share their knowledge of the local trails or point you in the right direction.
