Trevor from Forrest Wines Ltd was with us recently for a wine tasting. Forrest Wines are in Renwick, just on the outskirts of Blenheim and was one of the first 10 winery businesses established in the Marlborough Region. It is a small “hands on” winery owned and run by Drs John and Brigid Forrest. Dr John brings to winemaking the discipline of a scientist and his own exuberant artistic flair, focusing on making premium wines that reflect the land they are grown upon.
At Breakers, we include a selection of Forrest Wines on our NZ beer and wine list available to our guests during their stay with us. Needless to say it is very important that we trial these wines and ensure they are good for our guest consumption…….
Roger – one of our neighbours has also popped over to share in the wine tasting and some homemade pizzas with us. Roger is one of the local wine connoisseurs of the West Coast and writes a weekly column regarding wine and beer for the local paper as well as teaching wine appreciation at the local Polytechnic. He is a leading figure on the West Coast regarding wine and helps organise and host the yearly West Coast Wine Challenge held each October.
It is good to have a catch up with both Roger and Trevor – learn more of what is happening with the wine industry in NZ and the local wine characters of the West Coast. Roger always has some great stories to tell regarding wine evenings and tastings he has been too as well as general West Coast stories often from the 1970s. A very interesting man.
It is a beautiful summer’s evening on the West Coast and a great evening for eating pizza and sampling wine. Forrest have an array of wines to choose from – the usual suspects Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir as well as specialty wines using new grape varieties and alternative winemaking techniques such as Arneis and Gruner Veltliner. They also have Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc and Rose as well as a Botrytised Riesling. Forrest offer an outstanding product and win numerous wine awards each year for many of their wines.
It is great to have the opportunity to catch up with Trevor and spend some time with him and sample a selection of the offerings from Forrest Wines Ltd.
