Runanga Swimming Pool Grand Opening

New Spring Creek community swimming baths, Runanga, West Coast, NZ

At last we had the grand opening of the new Runanga community swimming baths – to be known as the Spring Creek Swimming Pool.  This was an exciting day as it had been a long time in the planning and finally came to fruition thanks to the dedication of some hardworking and determined locals.  The occasion marks a milestone of achievement for this local group of volunteers, sponsors and contractors.  The main sponsor is the Spring Creek Mining Company – hence the name.  Other sponsorship monies came from Runanga Pool Trust, Grey District Council, Runanga Infrastructure fund and Solid Energy.

About 150 people attended the opening on a gorgeous West Coast morning.  After the formalities the pool trust Chairman Chris Frogley, who was instrumental in the vision and completion of the project,  “jumped” in, fully clothed, to christen the pool.  Afterwards dozens of children also jumped in and the festivities to celebrate the opening began.

The newly completed upmarket facility is a user-friendly pool with a 25m main pool at a maximum depth of 1.5metres with an extra sloped learners’ pool also part of the facility.  There are male and female changing rooms with a capacity of 19 people, complete with all facility requirements, plus two sets of disability changing sheds, storage room and a modern office.

The pools have been designed to provide the best of facilities – tiled tops, overflows and easy accessibility for users.  The pool complex is under cover with a separate entertainment area outside including BBQ and landscaped area for the whole family to use.  This is a huge asset for the Runanga area community and will be a great gathering place for friends and family alike.

Well done to the Runanga community and this wonderful group of volunteers and supporters.  We look forward to making the most of this great facility.

Breakers is a boutique bed & breakfast on the Punakaiki coastline overlooking the Tasman Sea – 7kms north of Runanga so nice and close to the swimming pool.  Ask Jan if you’re staying at Breakers for hours for the swimming pool.
