Jurassic Park in New Zealand – hidden gems of South Westland

South Westland Rain Forest

Taking a walk in the bush on the West Coast you could be forgiven for thinking you’d just stepped onto the film set of Jurassic Park.

Many of our forests and trees are from the Jurassic era and taking a walk in the forest you can almost imagine the dinosaurs roaming.

adventure awaits in the forest South Westland

Rain forest walk South Westland

While in South Westland recently we took a walk with our friends – actually on a mountain bike track (I’ve blogged about it – the Fault-line).  Sometimes when you are zooming along on your bike, especially on a downhill track you don’t get the opportunity to take a look around you.

This track is awesome – the trees covered in growth – a living community and thriving ecosystem and a wonder to look at.

This is a wonderful share… I believe NZ has a very strict environmental policy, with no cutting of trees and when arriving by plane a very strict clean golf shoes etc to ensure no foriegn seed are brought in… Looking at these photos I can see why, these are very special natural areas for greenies like me to enjoy… love the trees and love this post… Good for you NZ for being so strict and protecting such natural forestry…

NZ is very strict – coming into the country with any outdoor equipment. I find it good actually, always declare something – lines are always shorter so you get through quicker anyway! Such a small country it is very easy for our environment, flora and fauna to be destroyed due to foreign beings that they can’t cope with. The opposum is a perfect example – causes major destruction of our forest. DOC works hard though to combat these problems.

I wish more countries were like this.. as I watch the invader plants taking over here at an alarming rate… we have the new laws, but are they being adhered to?? NO…

  2. What an amazing place. So verdant and lush. Beautiful.

It is amazing and first time we’ve looked properly as normally zooming through on our bikes. It is quite stunning.
