Petrol head heaven
That’s what the annual Greymouth Motorbike Street Racing is – and you don’t even had to be a petrol-head to enjoy it.
The main town centre streets of Greymouth are closed off to traffic, safety barriers are placed around the town and the town comes alive to the sound of….. well to the sound of vvrrrrmmmm, vvvrrrrmmmmm, vvvrrrrmmmmmm – awesome! and ok I can’t type the sound of motorbikes revving and screaming around roads but I’m sure you get the idea and can imagine awesomeness for yourself tee hee.
Despite the weather forecast for the weekend the weather managed to hold out and there were predominately blue skies. A couple of downpours did make for some interesting laps of the track though. The riders changed their tyres for the wet surface but once the sun was back out the roads soon dried. Luckily they only race about four laps a race so getting the tyres wrong isn’t too much of an issue – although those wet white lines can be and there were a couple of little accidents but thankfully no serious injuries – added to the excitement for the spectators though – sorry guys 😦
It was great to see so many people out and about and enjoy the day. Many of the cafes and bars were open with people spilling out the doorways and even out the windows.
Big up has to go out to the organisers and volunteers of this event. They do an amazing job – starting the day at 4.30am getting all the safety barriers in place and this event always appears to go smoothly from a spectators point of view anyway – congratulations guys and looking forward to next year. Except next year I’ll bring some earplugs…. but I say that every year and haven’t remember yet…….
Another Labour Weekend gone by – another great weekend at the street racing.
