November 15, an important day on the local cycling calender – the annual Coast Road Cycle Challenge, Westport to Greymouth. Covering some 100kms following the coastal drive – named one of the top ten coastal drives in the world by Lonely Planet.
Stephen headed out with his trusty instamatic to capture some of the riders as they come up the 12 mile hill – just north of us at Breakers.
Offering outstanding views I don’t think many of the riders were making the most of their surroundings.
Although there were some still brandishing large smiles………
The forecast for the day was a shocker with a heavy rain warning. Thankfully the weather Gods were much kinder and while there were occasional showers there was more often blue skies making the ride much more bearable I’m sure. Hard enough to bike 100kms without having to do it in pouring rain.
This next one is probably my favourite shot – the eventual winner of the race reaching the top of the last real hill climb, looking back to check on his progress and then he was gone.
The man in question won comfortably but unfortunately the results aren’t out so I don’t know his name but huge congratulations!
Jan and Stephen run Breakers Boutique Accommodation on the Great Coast Road north of Greymouth. The West Coast named one of the top ten regions to visit in the world by Lonely Planet – come and visit and you’ll soon see why.
