Motukeikei Beach – a Hidden Wonderland

With the sun shining and cleaning complete it was time to make the most of the gorgeous weather and head to the beach.

Not our beach today but we’re not going far, just the next beach along in fact – Motukeikei.

Motukeikei is a hidden wonderland.  The rock stacks can be seen from the road side above but for some the walkable access is hard to find – unless you know where to look……

Nope not telling……..

This beach is majestic and getting more and more well-known, especially with photographers.  Photographers love to come down and try to get photos of the rock pools and starfish.  For us though there is so much more to see.

Our walk today takes us south towards home.   The sheer cliff faces tower above us making us feel very small in comparison.

It is nice to let the water lap over our feet as we meander along the beach – a beach of contrasts with sand, rocky outcrops, rock pools, stones, boulders……..

and even a waterfall

The dogs love this beach as much as we do – Ziggy in the rock pools trying to find I don’t know what really and Nico following Mum, sniffing this, sniffing that – and I don’t mean I’m sniffing this and sniffing that either!

There is heaps of driftwood washed up on the shoreline and the green moss on the rocks looks like a carpet of velvet.

Destination reached – the hole in rock and 10 mile creek.  Time to turn around and do it all again in reverse.  A lovely day for a walk on the beach – cool cloud formations, cool surf break, cool rocks formations – another cool West Coast beach.

Jan and Stephen run Breakers Boutique Accommodation on the Great Coast Road north of Greymouth.  Together with their faithful companions Nico and Ziggy they enjoy getting out and about and explore the many wonders that make up this beautiful region they get to call home.
