Early Snow – Polar Plunge in Central Otago

Down south in Central Otago recently for a mountain bike event.  Thankfully gorgeous day for the event – chilly start but sunshine for the most part – typical autumn weather…….

Until the next morning.  Snow was forecast but after heading to bed with clear starry skies we thought maybe the weather man had it wrong.

Nope – awoke the next morning to 5 inches of snow.  Yep it is only autumn and we’re in 5 inches of snow!  It was great – talk about pretty.  We were in the little forestry town of Naseby so it looked idyllic with all the snow hanging in the trees.  Then top that with the sun shining through and wow – it was like we were in a fairytale.

The boys weren’t too sure what to make of it at first but after a couple of steps and couple of snowballs thrown at them all was good and they were keen to explore.

Ziggy couldn’t quite fathom the fact he didn’t have as good footing as he is use to with the snow but he soon got the hang of it.

It was lovely to take a little walk around – being Monday morning there was pretty much no-one around.

We visited our friends Jean and Colin at their camp site at the camping ground.  Solitary camp site surrounded in snow – magic.

Colin came out and took refuse under a big tree – seemed like a good idea until we all got dumped on!  Thanks Colin 🙂

Jean and I took a walk over towards the amenities block, with the boys on their leads I was wishing I had a sled.

Bit more of a wander around and then back to our holiday house to pack up and head for home.  With more snow forecast we didn’t want to risk getting stuck – we had guests coming in a couple of days so needed to be on the other side of the Pass.

Thanks Naseby – we love you in the sunshine and we love you in the snow.  Time to get back to the West Coast and our more settled weather – we don’t get snow even in the winter so this was a real treat.
