Down south in Central Otago recently for a mountain bike event. Thankfully gorgeous day for the event – chilly start but sunshine for the most part – typical autumn weather…….
Until the next morning. Snow was forecast but after heading to bed with clear starry skies we thought maybe the weather man had it wrong.
Nope – awoke the next morning to 5 inches of snow. Yep it is only autumn and we’re in 5 inches of snow! It was great – talk about pretty. We were in the little forestry town of Naseby so it looked idyllic with all the snow hanging in the trees. Then top that with the sun shining through and wow – it was like we were in a fairytale.
The boys weren’t too sure what to make of it at first but after a couple of steps and couple of snowballs thrown at them all was good and they were keen to explore.
Ziggy couldn’t quite fathom the fact he didn’t have as good footing as he is use to with the snow but he soon got the hang of it.
It was lovely to take a little walk around – being Monday morning there was pretty much no-one around.
We visited our friends Jean and Colin at their camp site at the camping ground. Solitary camp site surrounded in snow – magic.
Colin came out and took refuse under a big tree – seemed like a good idea until we all got dumped on! Thanks Colin 🙂
Jean and I took a walk over towards the amenities block, with the boys on their leads I was wishing I had a sled.
Bit more of a wander around and then back to our holiday house to pack up and head for home. With more snow forecast we didn’t want to risk getting stuck – we had guests coming in a couple of days so needed to be on the other side of the Pass.
Thanks Naseby – we love you in the sunshine and we love you in the snow. Time to get back to the West Coast and our more settled weather – we don’t get snow even in the winter so this was a real treat.
Jan and Stephen run Breakers Boutique Accommodation on the Great Coast Road north of Greymouth. They enjoy getting out and about and exploring the many wonders of the West Coast but also sharing their other adventures around New Zealand.
A beautiful fairy-tale wonderland has been captured in these photos. Throwing snowballs at your friends? Hope they whinged all the way back just to drive you mad.

They loved it lol. Ziggy was trying to catch them in his mouth, couldn’t quite figure out where they disappeared to once he caught them. Was a great experience for them – and for us to see them in the snow. They pretty much slept all the way home – content in the knowledge they were going home as as much as they love coming with us on our adventures there’s nothing quite like home.

Snowing already?! Looks beautiful! Mid-autumn here and the maximums are still around 27C so I’m still having to take a good amount of water on my hikes. How funny your dogs are in the snow! Gorgeous photos, as usual.

Thanks Jane. Yes it was a bit of a shock but thankfully we were prepared with warm clothing. Had been so lovely so thought perhaps they got it wrong but no it did arrive as predicted. Back to warm temperatures now before winter kicks in in another month.

Fairyland— an apt description. And it is always fun to watch dogs (and kids) with their first introduction to snow. –Curt

ha-ha – yes, just temporarily until I gave him some encouragement. He was funny with the “paw” testing.

It was beautiful to see Mama. A pleasant surprise for us all, just a shame we didn’t have more time to enjoy it.
